What's the Purpose of the Washer Lock?

A washer lock, also known as a locking washer or a spring washer, is a type of hardware component used in various applications to prevent fasteners like bolts and nuts from coming loose due to vibration or other forces. Its primary purpose is to provide a degree of resistance against rotational and vibrational forces that could cause nuts or bolts to unintentionally loosen over time.
The design of a washer lock typically involves a slightly conical or wave-like shape, which creates tension when compressed between the nut and the surface it's being tightened against. This tension helps maintain the clamping force between the nut and the bolt or threaded surface, reducing the chances of the fastener becoming loose due to vibrations or other external factors.
However, it's worth noting that while washer locks can provide some additional resistance to loosening, they might not be as effective as other methods such as using thread-locking compounds or using more advanced fastener designs specifically designed for high-vibration environments.
There are several types of washer locks, including:
Spring Washers: These have a wavy or serrated shape, and when compressed, they provide tension between the fastener and the surface, resisting loosening forces.
Toothed Lock Washers: These have teeth that bite into the fastener and the surface, preventing rotational movement.
Split Washers: These have a split or helical cut that creates tension when compressed.
External Tooth Lock Washers: These have teeth on the outside edge, gripping into the surface and the fastener.
Internal Tooth Lock Washers: These have teeth on the inside edge, gripping into the fastener and the surface.
Nord-Lock Washers: These are specifically designed to maintain tension even under extreme vibration and dynamic loads. They have a unique design that secures the fastener without damaging the surface.

How does the washer lock prevent nuts and bolts from loosening?

A washer lock, also known as a lock washer, is a type of hardware component used to prevent nuts and bolts from loosening due to vibration, movement, or other external forces. It works by introducing additional friction or tension between the nut, bolt, and the surface being fastened. There are a few common types of washer locks, each with its own mechanism for preventing loosening:
Split Washer (Spring Washer): This is one of the most well-known types of washer locks. It has a split or bent shape that creates tension when compressed between the nut and the surface. When the nut is tightened, the split washer is compressed, and this tension prevents the nut from easily rotating or coming loose. However, split washers are not always as effective as other locking mechanisms and can lose their tension over time.
Toothed Washer (External Tooth Washer and Internal Tooth Washer): Toothed washers have serrations or teeth along their edges. When the nut is tightened, these teeth dig into the surface material and the nut itself, creating friction that resists rotational forces. External tooth washers have teeth on the outer diameter and press against the nut, while internal tooth washers have teeth on the inner diameter and press against the bolt head.
Locking Tab Washer (Tab Washer or Tab Lock Washer): This type of washer has small tabs that are bent over the edge of the nut or bolt head after they are tightened. The tabs physically block the nut or bolt from rotating. Locking tab washers are commonly used in applications where extreme vibration or heavy loads are expected.
Nylon Insert Lock Nut (Nylock Nut): While not a traditional washer, a Nylock nut has a nylon insert at the top. When the nut is threaded onto a bolt, the nylon insert creates friction against the threads, making it resistant to vibration-induced loosening. The nylon insert deforms slightly, locking the nut in place.
Thread-Locking Adhesives: In some cases, thread-locking adhesives (such as Loctite) can be used to prevent nuts and bolts from loosening. These adhesives are applied to the threads before assembly and cure to create a strong bond, essentially "gluing" the threads together. They are particularly effective in high-vibration environments.
